HUN-REN Data Repository Platform

Needs assesment of researchers for the ELKH ARP project closed

The main objective of the ELKH Data Repository Platform (ELKH ARP) project is to create a data repository based on the service already provided by CONCORDA, but reaching a wider research community. In order to tailor the services as much as possible to the needs of researchers, a complex qualitative and quantitative survey was carried out to map the knowledge, experience and needs of ELKH researchers in relation to data management. The aim was to reach researchers and research teams from all institutions in the ELKH research network through primary data collection - online questionnaires and interviews. The online questionnaire was completed in 17 institutions and information was collected on the data management practices of 129 researchers and research teams. The 52 interview respondents also represent 17 institutions, from all fields of scientific disciplines.

Disciplinary expectations regarding the publication of research data among the respondents are as follows:

Publication of data is a disciplinary expectation

Always 25
In some cases 59
No 11
Not sure 4
Other 1

Significant data storage needs arise during research in Hungary as well, about 40% of which are not or not fully resolved within the research network:

Data storage within the institution

Fully solved 54
Partially solved 36
Not solved 3
Not sure 7

Long-term storage within the institution is not necessarily seamless either:

Archiving within the institution

Fully solved 40
Partially solved 34
Not solved 11
Not sure 15

Our research also highlights the importance of the ELKH ARP project. The survey shows that in many cases Hungarian researchers are expected to publish their data, but the institutional conditions for this are not always met.
